Support FEAST this Saturday at Glasslands

November 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

This Saturday, November 21 FEAST will be holding a fundraiser at Glasslands in Williamsburg. I can’t go, but I still wanted to spread the word…

The event is from 8-11.30 pm and from 8-9pm there will be free Brooklyn Brewery Beer. $5-10 donation at the door. Dancing, raffles, prizes, and surprises.

As many of you know, FEAST funded my work for pay project and lots of other amazing projects.

From the FEAST website:
FEAST is a recurring public dinner designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund new and emerging artmakers. At each FEAST, participants will pay a sliding-scale entrance fee for which they will receive supper and a ballot. Diners will vote on a variety of proposed artist projects. At the end of dinner, the artist whose proposal receives the most votes will be awarded funds collected through the entrance fee to produce the project. The work will then be presented during the next FEAST.

Facebook invite here.

Rehearsals with Lindsay

November 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

My friend Lindsay and I have been rehearsing together for four weeks now. We are working on a collaboration–as of now it’s untitled–which we will show in-progress at Movement Research’s Open Performance series on December 9. If all goes well we’re hoping to show a more final product in the spring in New York and then in the summer… Berlin? I’m always trying to get there and I feel like the more I say I’m going the more likely I am to actually get there.

PICT0404

This photo is from a rehearsal in Chez Bushwick, my favorite place to make work. So far we have been accumulating material in the form of games, movements, and scenes. Now we are trying to make sense of all that. Some things that have come up are: Being alone / being with others (what does it mean to have a witness to oneself?). Everyday movement–what is the rhythm of a work day and/or physical labor? Sound / movement cues–how does sound affect action and vice versa?

More soon.

Time is not Even, Space is not Empty

November 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

If you are in the Connecticut area this month, please come check out Eiko & Koma’s exhibition at Wesleyan, Time is not Even, Space is not Empty. I’ve been working with Eiko & Koma since April, helping to plan their three-year Retrospective Project. Read more about the project here.

Time is not Even, Space is not Empty

Friday, November 20 through Sunday, December 20
Closed Tuesday November 24 through Monday, November 30

Opening reception: Thursday, November 19, 5-7pm
Special performance: 5:30pm

Performing artists Eiko & Koma have a rich history at Wesleyan as performers and teachers. For the past several years, Eiko has been a fellow with the Center for Creative Research (CCR) and has served as a Visiting Instructor in Dance and East Asian Studies, as well as teaching Delicious Movement workshops in various curricular contexts. This fall Eiko & Koma will create an exhibition in Zilkha Gallery as one of the inaugural events of their multi-year, multi-faceted Retrospective Project. Tentatively titled Time Is not Even, Space Is not Empty, the new installation will provide an opportunity for the artists to remember, reflect upon and share their past and present. The ideas explored in Zilkha Gallery will culminate in a “living installation” at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in 2010 and subsequently in New York City.

Roarke Menzies at my house

September 14, 2009 · Leave a Comment

For the past half year or so I’ve been hosting “show & tell” events in my apartment. The idea is to give local (or not so local) artists a chance to try out works in progress in a supportive and constructive environment. Contact me if you’d like to be on the mailing list. Here is a composition by Roarke Menzies from Friday night:
