thoughts on new work…

October 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I am now back rehearsing with Khalia, Owen, and Danya for a new work that will be shown as a work-in-progress at Greenspace in December (see my events page for more info).

Right now we’re in the messing-around stage (a favorite of my mine) but we’re working broadly with an idea of INTIMATE SPACE… what makes a place intimate and how to disrupt it. I just came across a strange example of intimate space (on Wikipedia, of course): Egg Dancing.

In their example, potential brides and grooms in 15th century Europe had to undergo an egg dancing ceremony. In this ceremony, the couple danced atop a surface strewn with eggs. They could only be married if the dance ended with all eggs intact. I love how rich this image is… a public event in which the course of your intimate life is determined by your ability to maneuver around eggs.
